blindspot
Zach Murphy

Zachary Murphy’s blindspot is a animated film based of an original story concept developed and written by the artist, co-written by Eric Tyndale. The film tells the story of depression and isolation through the eyes of the one main character, “John”. The short was filmed digitally and was animated by interpolated rotoscoping over the original footage; a process that involves drawing over each frame, which creates a hyper-stylized abstract look.

blindspot can be viewed as an abstract self-portrait. It is a short that was conceived with one feeling in mind, and that is loneliness. I explored how to visualize the notion of being completely alone, independent of the circumstances leading up to this loneliness. I truly believe that we are all a product of our own environment; a concept that I've encapsulated into the character of “John”. I felt the only way to really show an audience this feeling was through the medium of animation; creating a distorted view of reality while also being able to easily become abstraction at anytime. blindspot is a window into the life of one man, and yes, perhaps that life is mine.
